Red Onion
Red onions are crisp, colorful onions with a sharp raw bite that becomes sweet when cooked.
How it compares to Yellow onion
Red onion is often milder and better for raw dishes, while yellow onion is the usual all-purpose cooking onion.
Storage & handling
- Remove the dry outer skin and any soft layers.
- Refrigerate cut onion in a sealed container.
- Quick refrigerator pickles are not shelf-stable canned food.
3 Ways to Cook Red Onion
Quick-Pickled Red OnionsTangy pink onions for tacos and sandwiches.+
Ingredients
- 1 sliced red onion
- 1/2 cup vinegar
- 1/2 cup water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
Instructions
- Pack onion into a clean jar.
- Warm vinegar, water, sugar and salt until dissolved.
- Pour over onion.
- Cool and refrigerate.
- Wait at least 1 hour before serving.

Caramelized Red OnionsSlow-cooked onions with deep sweetness.+
Ingredients
- 3 sliced red onions
- 2 tablespoons oil
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon balsamic vinegar
Instructions
- Heat oil over medium-low heat.
- Add onions and salt.
- Cook 35 to 45 minutes, stirring often.
- Add a splash of water if sticking.
- Finish with balsamic vinegar.

Instructions

- Rest 15 minutes before serving.
